Graphite is mined around the world by both open pit and underground methods. While flake graphite and amorphous graphite are both mined open pit and underground, lump (vein) graphite is only mined underground in Sri Lanka. Open pit mines employ heavy equipment (i.e. front end loaders, bulldozers) to scoop up the ore, which is usually put in trucks (Euclids) and moved to the plant. Underground graphite mines employ drilling and blasting to break up the hard rock (ore), which is then moved by mine cars pulled by a locomotive, or moved by automotive vehicles, to the surface and then to the plant. In less-developed areas of the world such as China, the ore is often mined by pick and shovel and transported by mine cars pushed by labourers.
Raw graphite first enter graphite crushing plant to become crushed to smaller size. The graphite crushing plant consists of jaw crusher, cone crusher, impact crusher, belt conveyor, vibrating screen and vibrating feeder. Then they're lifted to storage space by elevator. Vibrating feeder will feed supplies into graphite grinding mill evenly and steadily. Just after being grinded, the graphite powder will probably be blowed to cyclone by blower. Then the graphite powder will probably be transferred to storage room via pipes, and after that will likely be discharged as final solutions. Occasionally the crushing process isn't required, in some cases grinding process will not be required.
After being crushed by crushing machine such as jaw crusher, impact crusher and cone crusher, the crushed particles still can't meet size requirement need to be grinded by grinding mills.
